The White lilac festival is dedicated to Sergei Rachmaninoff. The composer visited Kazan twice (in 1910 and 1916) with the inspection of musical institutions, and was friendly with Chaliapin. In addition, according to one version, the Rachmaninoff family has Tatar roots. Here are three reasons why the new festival was born in Kazan. Thanks to the recommendation of Denis Matsuev, the composer's grandson, President of the Rachmaninoff Foundation Alexander Rachmaninoff – Konus (1933 – 2012), became the guest of honor at the White lilac festival.he expressed his desire to become the honorary President of the festival and take an expert part in the orchestra's repertoire policy. In addition to concerts, it was possible to restore the memorial plaque on the city Hall (the former noble Assembly), in the column hall of which Rachmaninoff twice performed, and to lay the Avenue of white lilac on Freedom Square in Kazan. At the first festival in may 2011, Rachmaninoff's Second and Third piano concertos (soloists – Ramzi Yassa and Boris Berezovsky), Rachmaninoff's first and Second Symphony, his cantata "Spring" and "Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini" (soloist – Denis Matsuev), and Stravinsky's "sacred Spring" were performed. A year later at the second festival - all four Rachmaninoff piano concertos (soloists, respectively, Dmitry Mayboroda, Polina Osetinskaya, Nikolai Lugansky, Sean Botkin-USA / Japan), "Island of the dead", "Symphonic dances", etc.
